AVM sites are locations where birds with the characteristic brain lesions have been documented. AVM sites (shown as white plus signs) are located in Texas, Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Stigonematales density is indicated by the color of the circle. Sites with dense coverage (>75%) of Stigonematales are white. Those with moderate coverage (50-75%) are colored lavender. Sites where Stigonematales coverage was low (25-50%) or rare (<25%) are blue and light blue, respectively. Sites where Stigonematales was not found are green. Since the field correlation has been established between the Stigonematales algae and the presence of AVM, this is a valuable tool for scientists to track the potential spread of the bird disease. There is complete overlap of sites with the highest density of Stigonematales and AVM positive status. All AVM sites have been documented with the presence of the cyanobacteria suspected of producing the AVM neurotoxin.
