GPS Research in Rorested Conditions

Whitehall Forest, four miles from the main UGA campus, contains a forested GPS test site which is the most extensive in the United States, and the only one to our knowledge in the South. A number of recent studies have been conducted here, by faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students. Studies have investigated the relative accuracy of mapping-grade and recreation-grade equipment, and have concentrated on the effects of forest type, weather conditions, and slope position. These studies have illustrated the horizontal position accuracy that can be obtained with current technology in forest conditions throughout the Piedmont of the United States during both leaf-on (summer) and leaf-off (winter) conditions.
