A surprising mussel discovery: Warnell researchers discover Purple Bankclimbers’ host fish

Mussel researchers have long been stymied in their efforts to study the reproductive habits of mussels, the often-overlooked mollusks that live in rivers and filter the water by removing contaminants and balancing bacteria levels. Identification of the fish species mussels use as hosts can be difficult, but University of Georgia researchers have done just that with the federally threatened purple bankclimber mussel.

The Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources held the 82nd Annual Spring Awards Banquet last week to recognize a new crop of scholarship and award winners. Also recognized at the awards banquet were faculty members who have won several recent distinguished honors.

Honors student to present research findings on Capitol Hill

University of Georgia Honors student Theresa Stratmann will discuss her research with members of the Georgia and South Carolina congressional delegations as part of the Council for Undergraduate Research Posters on the Hill Program.

Stratmann, a senior from Irmo, S.C., who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree from the Odum School of Ecology and conducts research through the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, was one of 60 students nationwide chosen from 800 applicants to participate in the program, which will be held April 23 and 24.

Find confirms gopher frog reproduction at Williams Bluff

Good news from the Department of Natural Resources! DNR says we can mark another significant first for the gopher frog restoration effort in southwest Georgia. Last week, senior wildlife biologist John Jensen with Georgia DNR’s Nongame Conservation Section found a gopher frog egg mass at Williams Bluffs Preserve in Early County.

Lumberjack Ball set for April 20

Clear your schedules for April 20th! You are going to want to be at LumberJack Ball hosted by Xi Sigma Pi. NRRT Society will be constructing an obstacle course, there will be competitions in arm wrestling, corn hole, tug-o-war, and of course, the LumberJACK and LumberJILL pageant.
