The Honorable Antoni Macierewicz, one of Poland’s most renowned members of Parliament, visits Warnell

The Warnell School received a rare visit from and exciting guest recently: a member of Poland’s parliament and one of the most renowned Polish politicians. The Honorable Antoni Macierewicz, former secretary of interior and former deputy minister for national defense in Poland, visited UGA Athens Campus on May 16, 2013, to thank a group of Warnell professors for conducting a recent study of wood samples relevant to a tree that played a controversial role in the tragic crash of Polish Air Force One Tu-154 near Smolensk, Russia, on April 10, 2010.

Dr. Kamal Gandhi wins innovative instruction grant

Twenty-six University of Georgia faculty projects designed to improve teaching were recently funded through grants provided by the Office of the Vice President for Instruction, in collaboration with the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. Warnell’s Dr. Kamal Gandhi, an assistant professor of forest entomology, was awarded one of the grants for her project, “Enhancing & Digitizing the Forest Pest and Pathogen Collection at UGA.”

A surprising mussel discovery: Warnell researchers discover Purple Bankclimbers’ host fish

Mussel researchers have long been stymied in their efforts to study the reproductive habits of mussels, the often-overlooked mollusks that live in rivers and filter the water by removing contaminants and balancing bacteria levels. Identification of the fish species mussels use as hosts can be difficult, but University of Georgia researchers have done just that with the federally threatened purple bankclimber mussel.
