AWRA: American Water Resources Association
If you are interested in learning a non-traditional aspect of forest resources or are just enthusiastic about water quality and the environment, then the American Water Resources Association was made for you. The Association meets a couple of times a semester so you still have time for fun and study while interacting with students of similar interests and meeting important contacts.
AWRA participates in quarterly UOWN sampling, the Adopt-A-Stream program, and Project Wet. Exciting speakers are planned that are not only informative, but also enjoyable. Food and refreshments are provided and dates for these events will be announced. Visit AWRA’s website.
Society of American Foresters (SAF)
The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is the national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry profession in the United States. The mission of SAF is to advance the science, education, technology, and practice of forestry; to enhance the competency of its members; and to use the knowledge, skills, and conservation ethic of the profession to ensure the continued health and use of forest ecosystems and the present and future availability of forest resources to benefit society.
As a student member, you will receive the latest information through the Journal of Forestry and The Forestry Source; be able to meet and interact with the top leaders and experts in the profession; exchange ideas and info with other students; have access to the SAF website; and receive many other benefits. UGA Fisheries Society: A student sub-unit of the American Fisheries Society
The UGA Fisheries Society was formed in 1994 as a student organization of the Daniel B. Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources and the University of Georgia. The Club is composed of University students, staff, and faculty members with an interest in fisheries, ecology, limnology, and other disciplines involving aquatic resources. The Club has an active schedule that includes informative seminars, community service projects, and fun activities. In the spring of 2000, we were recognized as an official Student Sub-Unit of the Georgia Chapter of the American Fisheries Society. Visit the Fisheries Society website.
UGA Forestry Club
The UGA Forestry Club is designed to help students learn more about their future careers while having fun and socializing with people of similar interests. Pre-professional, professional, and graduate students attend bi-weekly meetings to listen to speakers from a variety of forestry professions. Refreshments, food, and chances to meet other students are provided. The Club is involved in hosting a variety of School activities, FFA Forestry Field Days, and participating in the intercollegiate ASFC Conclave event. Conclave is a competition among 15 colleges and universities with forestry programs across the Southeast. Students compete in a variety of physical and technical events, including log birling, log chopping, crosscut saw, dendrology, and timber volume estimation. The Forestry Club is an informative, yet relaxed, way to find out about issues and opportunities in forest resources. Meetings are announced through e-mail and bulletin board messages. To visit the Forestry Club’s website, click here.
The Wildlife Society
This club is the student chapter of The Wildlife Society. The club is comprised of professional, pre-professional, and graduate students; meetings are held bi-weekly at WSFR. Guest speakers from throughout the State and within WSFR discuss career opportunities and current events. Club members also attend meetings throughout the Southeast.
The Wildlife Society is involved in several different functions during the year. We participate in Hunters for the Hungry and host the annual Wildlife Dinner, where students can sample a variety of exotic game dishes. The highlight of the year is the Wildlife Conclave, a competition among several universities from the Southeast in wildlife-related events. Some of the events include skeet shoot, obstacle course, kayaking, bow & arrow shoot, quiz bowl, and a drawing contest. Visit the Wildlife Society website.
Soil & Water Conservation Society
The University of Georgia student chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) is dedicated to establishing beneficial relationships between students and promoting awareness of Georgia's soil and water resources and their conservation. The SWCS mission is to improve the quality of life for people in rural and urban areas through the conservation of soil, water, and related natural resources on working land- the land used to produce food, fiber, and other commodities and goods needed by individuals. As a member of the UGA student chapter, students are exposed to professionals in both public and private sectors of natural resource conservation; from private consultant groups to both state and federal government resource agencies. As the newest student organization at the Warnell school, SWCS is open to all majors and all undergraduates, graduates, and professionals interested in the conservation of our precious natural resources. For more information, visit the national website at www.swcs.org.
Xi Sigma Pi National Forestry Honor Society
The Society’s objectives are to promote a high standard of scholarship, to work for the improvement of forest resource professions, and to foster a fraternal spirit among those engaged in forest related activities.
Membership is by invitation; requirements include a 3.0 GPA in professional coursework and an honorable personal character. Xi Sigma Pi is an active service organization. Activities planned for the year include the Lumberjack Ball, food drive, Relay for Life, and Custodial Staff Appreciation Day.
New member induction takes place at the beginning of each semester and meetings are scheduled as needed.
Warnell Graduate Student Association
The Warnell Graduate Student Association is open to all graduate students within the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. WGSA provides a forum to address graduate student needs and interests and is a great way to meet fellow students.
WGSA hosts two major activities during the school year. Every fall, WGSA organizes a forum entitled “Getting into Grad School.” At this forum, Warnell graduate students and faculty talk with undergraduates about what it takes to get into (and stay in) graduate school.
The Graduate Student Symposium is held in the spring. This is an opportunity for grad students to present their research and learn more about the research undertaken by their peers. In addition, research support is made available to the best presenters in each subject category.
WGSA meetings are held every month. Look for flyers and email postings for the location of each meeting. Visit the Warnell Graduate Student Association Website
