Dr. Winn's research is focused on applying the modern tools of molecular biology and biotechnology to develop and use aquatic organisms as animal models in environmental and biomedical research. Among the studies being conducted includes research using a unique genetically modified small laboratory fish, the λ transgenic medaka, developed at ABEL to analyse mutations introduced in the fish following exposure to chemicals found the environment. ABEL, a unique research facility, is among the leading aquatic animal research centers in the world designed and devoted to improving our understanding of the similar processes of diseases shared among different species.
